TYPE: ACADEMY ASSIGNMENT

DATE: 19—12—2022

PRACTICE(S): research writing, bookmaking, print production, directing

Gallows on the Square is a collection of two essays I wrote during my second academic year at WdKA, and a result of various assignments and exercises from classes organised during this period. These essays comprise of a commentary-esque breakdown of French philosopher Guy Debord’s writings in his book The Society of the Spectacle. Specifically on his sixth chapter, which researches the dimension of time: ‘Spectacular Time’. The Situationist principles, literature and the ideas of ‘The Society of the Spectacle’ are rather difficult to decipher and digest. It is therefore that I opted for a more comprehensible piece of media to assist in unfolding the theoretical subjects; Charles ‘Charlie’ Chaplin’s film: City Lights, released in 1931. Chaplin’s characters are the tonality of my investigation, giving shape and simplicity to Debord’s condensed wording. Making it relatable and even applicable to our modern-day.

In a collaborated effort our major class organised an exhibition called the ‘Secret Garden Book Fair’, under the creative direction of Zofia Bochińska. Here we could all showcase the books we had made for the semester’s assignment. I was appointed the task of directing and leading the editorial and promotion teams.
